housemate's cat got my jacket

My housemate's cat destroyed my leather jacket.

I just moved into this place and after a toxic housemate finally made his exit at the very start of me staying here, I thought all was well until it wasn't.

He got into my room while I wasn't looking and was trapped in here for hours. The jacket was the only thing he destroyed - thankfully. 

Really hoping Portland Maine works out so I can move - for a lot of reasons. I want to live on my own. Even if I choose not to live on my own I want to be in a position where I have the option to live on my own.

Maybe I own my own home and I can pick who else lives there and no pets allowed. I know that humans can also destroy people's things but I can't hold an animal accountable like I can hold a human accountable. Or maybe live on my own I don't have to worry about any of that.
